ArtsPark
Every year, people tell us they look forward to ArtsPark and we know why... it's a low-key, one-day outdoor festival of art, music, performance... it's a very urban village fair ... it's free... and it's fun for everyone in the family.

Join us Sunday 13 May 2007, Mothers' Day, at Parkdale Market (Parkdale Avenue at Armstrong Street in the heart of Hintonburg's QUAD arts district), Ottawa, and browse the work of local jewellery and textile designers, see displays from more than 20 artists and enjoy the talent of scores of musicians and performers. Plan to be part of the ArtsPark experience!

ArtsPark is made possible by the generosity of our partners -- please support them too!
ArtsPark is an annual event organized by the Hintonburg Community Association to celebrate culture in the QUAD arts district.

Music

Noon Carleton Bovell
Carleton BovellSinger-songwriter Carleton Bovell describes his sound as modern acoustic rock. Although his sound may be as full as a four-piece band, he creates his rich acoustic guitar rock textures by stacking harmonies with the inventive use of a digital loop sampler. Even the drum beats are played by Carleton on guitar. "Musically, I try to be as honest as my lyrics," Carleton says. "By layering parts myself, I am able to give the audience a performance that is 100% me." In 2004, his single "It Just Wasn't Love" was named Ottawa's winner in the National Songwriting Competition and his new CD Her has recently been released. Weather dependent.

1:00 pm Ottawa Community Concert BandOttawa Community Concert Band
In the late 1960s, a small group of amateur musicians were taking part in an adult education program at Highland Park School in Ottawa and came up with the idea of starting a regular amateur band. Fast forward about 40 years and the Ottawa Community Concert Band was awarded a gold certificate at the Kiwanis Music Festival -- twice! A huge hit at ArtsPark 2005, the 40-member band will perform a varied program of classical, marches, old-time favourites, show tunes, big band and jazz. You'll love the pure, un-miked sound in the great outdoors. Weather dependent. (Several band members will be joining the Parkdale Orchestra for a baroque concert at 3pm in the Parkdale United Church, 429 Parkdale Avenue.)

2:00 pm Lucky Ron and the McGillicuddy Sisters
Lucky RonAn Ottawa legend and Hintonburg's favourite balladeer, country stylist Lucky Ron is joined by the McGillicuddy Sisters, a six-member rockin' hillbilly band who provide lively roots entertainment in the genre of such early recording artists as Rose Maddox, Little Jimmy Dickens, The Stanley Brothers. Join us for a performance that demands audience participation! Weather dependent.

3:00 pm Dancin' in the street with electronic musician Simon Ears
Simon Ears, AKA Tekno Turtle, is by trade an electronic producer and live performer. Part of the electronic music industry since the 1980's, he's crafted a persona embodying the essence of a tekno artist. He's traveled the world, played records, played synths, recorded analog sounds onto tape and now has fully embraced the digital world. Influenced by many such as Kraftwerk, Gary Numan and Chemical Brothers, he's done everything from the Ronnie Dawson thing, the BB King thing, to the underground thing and now he's doing the CQDX thing. Weather dependent. Preview Teckno Turtle live on CFUO-89.1FM every Friday, midnight to 6am... or get his newest CD at ArtsPark and listen anytime.
