On the morning of May 1, a small fire caused $20,000 of damage to one of the large double-doors and frame of the Parkdale United Church at the corner of Gladstone and Parkdale. No one was inside the church at the time, thankfully.
The Church is insured, but the policy carries a $5,000 deductible.
Parkdale United is a mainstay of the Hintonburg community. Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey is heavily involved in our neighbourhood, and the Church provides programs for less fortunate residents of the 'Burg. The Hintonburg Community Association is asking for your help to offset the deductible. Money spent on repairs is money that won't be spent on much-needed programs.
Update: We were ecstatic this afternoon after receiving a $500 donation for the Church from the Somerset West Community Health Centre. Rosemary Jones at the Centre told the HCA they were pleased to "dig deep" for the Church, which is an important supporter of its activities. For instance, SWCHC is charged with managing and operating the Headstart Queensway Preschool, which is housed at and and receives significant support from Parkdale United. Both Global Pet Foods (1200 Wellington W.) and Marshall's Personal Improvement Centre (1076 Wellington W.) have graciously agreed to accept donations. Note: one of our board members was among the first to find the fire and provided information to residents through the event using the @HintonburgCA Twitter account. While waiting for trucks to arrive, two passersby attempted to snuff the fire out, while our member knocked on the immediate neighbours' doors to find a fire extinguisher. At the first door he knocked on, the resident did not have an extinguisher. This is a great reminder that all Hintonburg residents should have an extinguisher in working order to prepare for the unexpected.
